Employment Green Cards: If you are seeking employment in the United States, it is much easier to come in if you are a skilled worker or a professional, but not very easy for unskilled workers. In general, those who get employment green cards must get sponsorship from an American company, which is easier to get in technical jobs or jobs that require foreign language skills. Jobs requiring at least two years experience make it easier and quicker to get a green card. Family Green Card (or Family Sponsorship): For people related to someone in the United States, permanent residents can apply to sponsor someone like a parent, spouse, or child to come to the United States with a green card. Green Card Lottery: The Green Card Lottery is an annual lottery drawing program run by the U.S. Department of State. The lottery gives people from countries with low U.S. immigration a chance to immigrate to the United States even if they don't have close relatives or a job offer in the U.S. The program offers up to 55,000 permanent resident visas each year to applicants selected through a random computer generated lottery drawing. Naturalization: Naturalization is the process by which lawful permanent residents become U.S. citizens. To be eligible, immigrants must have lived in the United States for a certain number of years, learned English, be able to demonstrate a knowledge of history and government, be free of any criminal history and have a good moral character. Permanent Residency or United States Citizenship: In general, citizenship is more likely to be granted to those who are on employment green cards sponsored by a company or a family green card, where a family member sponsors the prospective citizen. Political Asylum: An asylee is an individual who has been granted political asylum. Political asylum is based upon an individual's fear of persecution on account race, religion, political opinion or membership in a social group or nationality. An asylee can usually apply for permanent resident status one year after the grant of political asylum. All news |
